What is Dapo virus?

Dapo is a type of ransomware that is a variant of STOP ransomware. It is capable of encrypting the data of the victim using a strong encryption algorithm and then demanding a ransom from them to get the decryption key. The encrypted files are given a new name with “.Dapo” added to their original name. A file named “_readme.txt” is also created in the folder where encrypted files are stored. This file contains the ransom message that the attackers want the victims to see.

Dapo ransomware in detail

The Dapo ransomware is a malicious program that encrypts most of the files on an infected computer, but it avoids encrypting system files and files with the name “_readme.txt” to prevent the system from crashing. Additionally, the malware can encrypt files saved on connected drives or cloud storage. The encryption process is carried out using a unique key, which differs from one infected computer to another. If it is unable to connect to its command server, it uses an offline key that is common to all victims. Researchers have found a way to get hold of these keys.

After the encryption, the ransomware renames all the encrypted files with the “.Dapo” extension, and places a ransom message in a file called “_readme.txt” that informs the victim about the attack and demands payment of $980 for the unique key and decryptor. The attackers require payment within 72 hours and offer a 50% discount, but experts warn against paying the ransom as there is no guarantee that the files will be decrypted.

Dapo ransomnote

Encrypted files are only partially encrypted, with only the first 154kb of data being encrypted. Victims can try to restore files from large ZIP archives by removing the “.Dapo” extension and opening the file in an archiver.

Dapo ransomware is usually distributed through downloads from unreliable websites or exploiting security loopholes in outdated software. To avoid such an attack, users should be wary of downloading software from untrusted sources and should keep their software up to date with the latest security patches.

If a user suspects that their files have been encrypted with the “.Dapo” extension, it is essential to remove the ransomware from their computer before trying to recover the files. The article provides detailed instructions on how to remove the malware, how to use the Dapo File Decrypt Tool to decrypt files, and how to recover files if the decryptor fails. Users are advised to follow all steps carefully to avoid missing any critical points.

How to remove Dapo virus (ransomware)

To successfully decrypt or recover .Dapo files, it is essential to eliminate Dapo ransomware and its autostart entries. Failing to do so may result in the ransomware re-encrypting the restored files. Stopping the ransomware is a straightforward process and can be accomplished through various methods. One way is to perform a complete system scan using malware removal tools that can detect and remove ransomware infections for free. To make the process more convenient, consider reading this entire guide and saving it on your smartphone or printing it out. This way, you will have easy access to all the necessary steps.

Scanning your computer for malware is crucial since security researchers have discovered that Dapo ransomware may install spyware alongside it. Spyware poses a significant security risk as it can steal sensitive information like passwords, login credentials, and contact details from the user. If you encounter any issues removing the Dapo virus, feel free to inform us in the comments section, and we will attempt to assist you.

To remove Dapo ransomware, follow the steps below:

  1. Kill Dapo virus
  2. Disable Dapo Start-Up
  3. Delete Dapo Task
  4. Remove Dapo virus

Kill Dapo virus

Press CTRL, ALT, DEL keys together.

remove ransomnote - task manager

Click Task Manager. Select the “Processes” tab, look for something suspicious that is the Dapo ransomware then right-click it and select “End Task” or “End Process” option. If your Task Manager does not open or the Windows reports “Task manager has been disabled by your administrator”, then follow the guide: How to Fix Task manager has been disabled by your administrator.

kill virus

Detecting a process related to the Dapo ransomware is a relatively simple task. To identify a malicious process, observe its icon and name carefully. Typically, this ransomware uses a process name in the format of 4 characters followed by either “.tmp.exe” or “.exe”. For instance, it could be “7533.tmp.exe,” “A4b1.exe,” “CD15.tmp.exe,” or “19b2.exe.” The process name may also include the phrase “(32 bit).” If you can’t locate a process with a name that follows this pattern in the list of processes, it is likely that the Dapo ransomware has already finished its operations. Nonetheless, bear in mind that if you fail to remove the ransomware autostart entries and delete its file, it may start again after a while and promptly encrypt any unencrypted files it finds.

Disable Dapo Start-Up

Select the “Start-Up” tab, look for something similar to the one shown in the example below, right click to it and select Disable.

disable startup

Close Task Manager.

Delete Dapo Task

Type “Task Scheduler” in the search bar. Click Task Scheduler app in the search results. Click “Task Scheduler Library” in the left panel. On the right panel, right-click to “Time Trigger Task” and select Delete.

Scan computer for malware

Malwarebytes is a reputable antivirus and anti-malware software that can be used to remove various types of malware from infected devices. However, the effectiveness of Malwarebytes in removing ransomware depends on the type and severity of the ransomware infection.

Malwarebytes can detect and remove most ransomware threats, including Dapo ransomware, which is a type of ransomware that encrypts victims’ files and demands a ransom for decryption. Malwarebytes uses advanced scanning algorithms and heuristics to detect and remove malicious files, processes, and registry entries associated with ransomware.

However, if the ransomware has already encrypted the victim’s files, Malwarebytes alone cannot decrypt them. In this case, the victim would need to use Stop (Djvu) Decryptor, or restore the encrypted files using the steps below.

How to decrypt .Dapo files

Files that have the extension ‘.Dapo’ have been encrypted and cannot be unlocked by simply renaming or changing the file name. To access the contents of these files, a decryptor is required. Thankfully, there is a Dapo File Decrypt Tool available that can decrypt these files for free. Instructions on how to download and use this tool are provided below.

STOP Djvu decryptor

Dapo File Decrypt Tool (STOP Djvu decryptor)

To decrypt .Dapo files, use Dapo File Decrypt Tool

  • Download Dapo File Decrypt Tool from the following link.
    STOP Djvu decryptor
  • Scroll down to ‘New Djvu ransomware’ section.
  • Click the download link and save the ‘decrypt_STOPDjvu.exe’ file to your desktop.
  • Run decrypt_STOPDjvu.exe, read the license terms and instructions.
  • On the ‘Decryptor’ tab, using the ‘Add a folder’ button, add the directory or disk where the encrypted files are located.
  • Click the ‘Decrypt’ button.

The Dapo File Decrypt Tool is a free solution that enables anyone to decrypt .Dapo files at no cost. However, it is important to note that the decryptor can only decrypt files that were encrypted using an offline key. If the files were encrypted with an online key, then the free decryptor will not be of any use. Nevertheless, there are alternative methods available to restore encrypted files in such cases, which are explained below.

How to find out which key was used to encrypt files

Since Dapo File Decrypt Tool only decrypts files encrypted with the offline key, each Dapo’s victim needs to find out which key was used to encrypt the files. Determining the type of key used is not difficult. Below we give two ways. Use any of them. We recommend using the second method, as it is more accurate.

personal id

Personal ID is highlighted here

Find out the type of key using ‘_readme.txt’ file

  • Open the ransom demand message (‘_readme.txt’ file).
  • Scroll down to the end of the file.
  • There you will see a line with the text ‘Your personal ID’.
  • Below is a line of characters that starts with ‘0664’ – this is your personal id.

Find out the type of key using ‘PersonalID.txt’ file

  • Open disk C.
  • Open directory ‘SystemID’.
  • Open file named ‘PersonalID.txt’. This file lists ‘Personal ID’s that match the keys that the virus used to encrypt files.

The ‘Personal ID’ is not a key, it is an identifier related to a key that was used to encrypt files. If the ID ends with ‘t1’, then the files are encrypted with an offline key. If the ID does not end with ‘t1’, Dapo virus used an online key. If you could not figure out how to determine which key was used to encrypt files, then we can help. Just write a request here or in the comments below.

Dapo File Decrypt Tool : “No key for New Variant online ID”

No key for New Variant online ID

If, when you try to decrypt .Dapo files, Dapo File Decrypt Tool reports:

No key for New Variant online ID: *
Notice: this ID appears to be an online ID, decryption is impossible

It means that your files are encrypted with an ‘online key’ and their decryption is impossible, since only the vari authors have the key necessary for decryption. In this case, you need to use alternative methods listed below to restore the contents of encrypted files.

Dapo File Decrypt Tool : “No key for New Variant offline ID”

No key for New Variant offline ID

If, during decryption of .Dapo files, Dapo File Decrypt Tool reports:

No key for New Variant offline ID: *t1
Notice: this ID appears be an offline ID, decryption MAY be possible in the future.

It means the following: your files are encrypted with an ‘offline key’, but the key itself has not yet been obtained by security researchers, in this case, you need to be patient and wait a while, in addition, you can also use alternative ways for recovering encrypted data.

If for some reason you were unable to decrypt the encrypted files, then We recommend to follow the news on our Facebook or YouTube channels. So you ‘ll know right away that it ‘s possible to decrypt .Dapo files.

This video step-by-step guide will demonstrate How to use STOP Djvu decryptor to decrypt encrypted files.

How to restore .Dapo files

Fortunately, there are alternative methods available to recover encrypted files that do not require a decryptor and a key. These methods can be used by any victim of ransomware, regardless of the key used to encrypt their files. Additionally, using these methods will not interfere with the decryption of files using a free Dapo File Decrypt Tool. However, it is important to check your computer for malware using free malware removal tools before attempting to recover your files. It is essential to ensure that the ransomware has been fully removed before proceeding with file recovery.
