What is Search Marquis?
The cyber threat analysts have determined that Search Marquis is a potentially unwanted application (PUA) that belongs to the group of browser hijackers. Browser hijacker is a kind of software that is developed to change the internet browser settings without the knowledge or permission of the computer user, and it usually redirects the affected system’s browser to some advertisement-related webpages. A browser hijacker redirects user web searches to its own web-page, generates multiple pop-up ads, changes the default web browser search engine or start page, initiates numerous pop ups and installs multiple toolbars on the internet browser. If your web browser is affected by a browser hijacker you may need to follow manual steps or use a malware removal tool to revert changes made to your internet browsers.
Typically, browser hijackers and PUAs promote fake search engines by setting their address as the homepage or search engine of the affected browser. In this case, the Search Marquis browser hijacker changes the browser settings to searchmarquis[.]com. That is, in other words, this browser hijacker is created for the sole purpose of forcing the user to visit the searchmarquis[.]com when the user opens the homepage or uses the search provider. Therefore, the only way to get rid of a browser redirect to this unwanted website is to completely remove the browser hijacker associated with it. The reason for this is that potentially unwanted apps and browser hijackers often block the ability to change browser settings, thus preventing the user from restoring the home page and search provider. For example, in this case, to delete searchmarquis[.]com from the address of the homepage and search provider, the user needs to uninstall the Search Marquis browser hijacker.
As well as unwanted browser redirects to searchmarquis[.]com, Search Marquis can collect your World Wide Web browsing activity by recording URLs visited, IP addresses, internet browser version and type, cookie information, Internet Service Provider (ISP) and web-pages visited. Such kind of behavior can lead to serious security problems or user data theft.
How can Search Marquis get on your MAC OS
Many browser hijackers like Search Marquis come from browser toolbars, browser extensions, BHOs (browser helper objects) and additional applications. Most often, these items claim itself as apps that improve your experience on the Internet by providing a fast and interactive startpage or a search engine that does not track you. Remember, how to avoid the unwanted programs. Be cautious, start only reputable applications which download from reputable sources. NEVER install an unknown and suspicious application.
