Deleting the PrivateSeeker, check the list of installed software first

First method for manual hijacker removal is to go into the MS Windows “Control Panel”, then “Uninstall a program” console. Fix web browser shortcuts, modified by PrivateSeeker browser hijacker

The browser hijacker which cause PrivateSeeker web-site to appear, can hijack various Windows shortcuts on your desktop (most often, all web-browsers shortcuts), so in this step you need to check and clean them by removing the argument such as http://site.address/.

Select the “Properties” option and it will display the shortcut file’s properties. Next, click the “Shortcut” tab and then delete the “http://site.address” string from Target field like below.

Then press OK to save changes. Repeat the step for all web browsers which are rerouted to the PrivateSeeker annoying web-page.

Delete PrivateSeeker from FF

If the Mozilla Firefox settings like home page, new tab and search engine have been changed by the hijacker, then resetting it to the default state can help.

Launch the Firefox and click the menu button (it looks like three stacked lines) at the top right of the browser screen. Next, click the question-mark icon at the bottom of the drop-down menu. It will display the slide-out menu.

Select the “Troubleshooting information”. If you’re unable to access the Help menu, then type “about:support” in your address bar and press Enter. It bring up the “Troubleshooting Information” page as shown in the following example.

Click the “Refresh Firefox” button at the top right of the Troubleshooting Information page. Select “Refresh Firefox” in the confirmation prompt. The FF will start a task to fix your problems that caused by the hijacker infection responsible for PrivateSeeker search. When, it is finished, press the “Finish” button.

Delete PrivateSeeker search from Internet Explorer

In order to recover all internet browser startpage, search provider and newtab page you need to reset the Microsoft Internet Explorer to the state, which was when the Windows was installed on your machine.

First, launch the Internet Explorer. Next, press the button in the form of gear (Microsoft Internet Explorer tools menu icon). It will open the Tools drop-down menu, press the “Internet Options” as on the image below.

In the “Internet Options” window click on the Advanced tab, then press the Reset button. The Microsoft Internet Explorer will show the “Reset Internet Explorer settings” window as displayed on the image below. Select the “Delete personal settings” check box, then press “Reset” button.

You will now need to restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

Delete PrivateSeeker homepage from Google Chrome

Run the Reset internet browser utility of the Chrome to reset all its settings like search provider, newtab and homepage to original defaults. This is a very useful tool to use, in the case of web browser hijacks like PrivateSeeker.

Open the Google Chrome menu by clicking on the button in the form of three horizontal dotes (chrome menu button). It will open the drop-down menu. Choose More Tools, then press Extensions.

Carefully browse through the list of installed addons. If the list has the addon labeled with “Installed by enterprise policy” or “Installed by your administrator”, then complete the following instructions: Remove Chrome extensions installed by enterprise policy otherwise, just go to the step below.

Open the Chrome main menu again, press to “Settings” option.

Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the “Advanced” link. Now scroll down until the Reset settings section is visible, as displayed in the figure below and press the “Reset settings to their original defaults” button.
