How to remove Vista Antispyware 2010, Vista Antivirus 2010, Vista Guardian, Vista Internet Security
Vista Antispyware 2010 also known as Vista Antivirus 2010, Vista Guardian, Vista Antivirus Pro and Vista Internet Security 2010 is a rogue antispyware program that reports false infections and shows numerous fake security alerts as an attempt to trick you into buying the software. This program is installed through the use of trojans. When the trojan is started, it will download and install Vista Antispyware 2010 (Vista Antivirus 2010 or Vista Guardian) onto your computer.
During installation, Vista Antispyware 2010 (Vista Antivirus 2010 or Vista Guardian) will register itself in the Windows registry to run automatically every time when you start an application (files with “exe” extension). The rogue also uses this method of running to block the ability to run any programs, including security applications.
Once running, Vista Antispyware 2010 (Vista Antivirus 2010 or Vista Guardian) will start a system scan and list a large amount of infections. All of these infections are fake, so you can safely ignore them. What is more, while the rogue is running, it will display fake security alerts and notifications with “Spyware infection has been found” or “Tracking software found” header. However, all of these alerts are fake.
Last but not least, Vista Antispyware 2010 (Vista Antivirus 2010 or Vista Guardian) will hijack Internet Explorer and Firefox and display fake warnings when you opening a web site.
As you can see, Vista Antispyware 2010 (Vista Antivirus 2010 or Vista Guardian) is scam, it is designed with one purpose to scare you into thinking that your computer in danger as a method to trick you into purchasing the full version of the program. If your computer is infected with this malware, then most importantly, do not purchase it! Uninstall the rogue from your PC as soon as possible. Use the removal guide below to remove Vista Antispyware 2010 (Vista Antivirus 2010 or Vista Guardian) from your computer for free.
Use the following instructions to remove Vista Antispyware 2010 (Vista Antivirus 2010, Vista Guardian, Vista Antivirus Pro or Vista Internet Security 2010)

Save this as fix.inf to your Desktop (remember to select Save as file type: All files in Notepad.)
Right click to fix.inf and select Install. Reboot your computer.
Step 2. Remove Vista Antispyware 2010 (Vista Antivirus 2010 or Vista Guardian) associated malware.
Download MalwareBytes Anti-malware (MBAM). Once downloaded, close all programs and windows on your computer.
Double-click on the icon on your desktop named mbam-setup.exe. This will start the installation of MalwareBytes Anti-malware onto your computer. When the installation begins, keep following the prompts in order to continue with the installation process. Do not make any changes to default settings and when the program has finished installing, make sure a checkmark is placed next to “Update Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware” and Launch “Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware”. Then click Finish.
MalwareBytes Anti-malware will now automatically start and you will see a message stating that you should update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
As MalwareBytes Anti-malware will automatically update itself after the install, you can press the OK button to close that box and you will now be at the main menu. You will see window similar to the one below.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Window
Make sure the “Perform quick scan” option is selected and then click on the Scan button to start scanning your computer for Vista Antispyware 2010 (Vista Antivirus 2010 or Vista Guardian) infection. This procedure can take some time, so please be patient.
When the scan is finished a message box will appear that it has completed scanning successfully. Click OK. Now click “Show Results”. You will see a list of infected items similar as shown below.
Note: list of infected items may be different than what is shown in the image below.

Malwarebytes Anti-malware, list of infected items
Make sure all entries have a checkmark at their far left and click “Remove Selected” button to remove Vista Antispyware 2010 (Vista Antivirus 2010 or Vista Guardian). MalwareBytes Anti-malware will now remove all of associated Vista Antispyware 2010 (Vista Antivirus 2010 or Vista Guardian) files and registry keys and add them to the programs’ quarantine. When MalwareBytes Anti-malware has finished removing the infection, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.

please let me know – would be very appreciative
Comment by sara — February 4, 2010 #
sara, go to step 1. Once done, try download MBAM, if it is blocked, then download it to another PC, then move the file to infected computer using flash disk or cd disk.
Comment by Patrik — February 5, 2010 #
Are these registry entries safe to delete? Or do I need a tool to properly handle them? (btw, thank you very much for the recourse! All other entries I’ve found for this virus seem oudated with references to other executables and registry values)
Comment by Max — February 5, 2010 #
Remove these keys:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\.exe]
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\secfile]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\secfile]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe\shell\open\command]
And restore to defaults:
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe]
@=”exefile”
“Content Type”=”application/x-msdownload”
Comment by Patrik — February 5, 2010 #
Hmmm, I was only able to locate the first two registry keys, and I removed them. This appears to have fixed the problem though!
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\secfile]
and
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe\shell\open\command]
did not appear to exist on my machine, and
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe] was still set to the default.
This strain has been a pain, but it looks like it’s taken care of now. Thanks for the help! I had a hell of a time located anything that would help me sort this thing out, you guys are awesome!
Comment by Max — February 5, 2010 #
Words cannot describe how much I love you for the help these instructions gave me!
Comment by Joe — February 5, 2010 #
@Sara;
Do you have a flash drive? If you do, why not just do step 1 *just don’t open it* on your friends computer and put it on the flash drive? or burn it to a CD for that matter. Save MBAM and put it on it as well.
Comment by Rachael — February 6, 2010 #
Didn’t help at all, I’v still got the same problem.
Comment by sarah — February 6, 2010 #
sooooooooo awesome thank u sooooo much it worked perfect
Comment by steve — February 6, 2010 #
I ran what you stated here and the results after the first time, the malware popped back up again. Ran the step a second time and documented what was going on. Again it was confirmed that the files checked were deleted. Here is the info:
Error: C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Roaming\Malwarebytes’\Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-2010-02-06 (15-38-23).txt is not a valid Win32 application.
Vendor Category Items
Malware.Packer.Gen Memory Process C:\User\Owner\AppData\Local\av.exe
Malware.Packer.Gen File C:\User\Owner\AppData\Local\av.exe
Spyware.OnlineGames File C:\Windows\Setup\SCRIPTS\START.EXE
Trojan.Fakealert Registry Key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\secfile
Hijacked.exeFile Registry Data HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe\(default)
After I receive Error and Click OK, Confirmation box appears and states that all checked items were successfully deleted.
Widows box appears stating that Malwarebytes had stopped working.
Hit Close Program.
Restart Computer.
Ok desktop is now back up and the malware seems to be gone. My explorer seem to have moved, but I was able to access the internet and to my home page.
My suggestion for those who tried the first time to go back and repeat the steps again. Because I had confirmation of the malware that was deleted the first time and ran the steps again a second time and it seems to be working now.
P.S. Someone should notify Microsoft of their own malware and the profit their making off of their own product and SUE their butt’s off.
I have Norton Anti-virus 2009 and I used Webroot Spy Sweeper both claimed that my notebook was secure. Norton found cookie tracker and deleted it but did not remove the malware. Spy Sweeper found nothing. The security setting on my notebook also stated that I was secure.
Comment by ELLE — February 6, 2010 #
Try repeating the steps again. It worked for me.
Comment by edlee — February 6, 2010 #
I owe you a big pint!!!!
Deleting av.exe kept explorer.exe from functioning properly but your reg file sorted it and allowed me to delete av.exe and then carry on with mbam.
Thank you
Comment by daryl — February 7, 2010 #
Why does this not automatically delete future attacks on my notebook from the same malware?
What I mean is that when I went back to surf the net the stupid malware leeched onto a different site I was going too and were back to square one again.
Is there a program that will stop this malware before I go to any other site?
Comment by ELLE — February 7, 2010 #
I tried to do step 1. Repair running of .exe files and it won’t let me open up notepad…can’t copy text into…what next. My other computer is an old window and doesn’t know vista for flashdrive transfer. Help..I am not the brightest in computers.
Comment by Jo — February 8, 2010 #
ELLE, you should have:
good antivirus
an antispyware (SpyBot is free and good, or full version of Malwarebytes, …)
alternate browser (Firefox, Opera)
firewall (Zone Alarm, Comodo, …)
be careful when opening attachments and downloading files
Comment by Patrik — February 8, 2010 #
Jo, go to c:\windows\system32, look for notepad.exe and rename it to notepad.com. Run it and follow the steps above.
Note: you need uncheck the “Hide file extensions for known types” option before doing it.
Comment by Patrik — February 10, 2010 #
hmmmmm i did the regedit fix and it worked, there seems to be no trace of that bastard anymore, is that normal? or should it still show up on the MBAM scan?…… it doesnt feel right :p
Comment by Charlie — February 10, 2010 #
Thank you,it worked for me
Comment by irene — February 10, 2010 #
why i have to pay ???????????? :S:S
Comment by izzy — February 10, 2010 #
You have no idea how efficient and helpful this was. I’m a student with many valuable reports on my drive, up at £:am fixing a virus, and your instructions managed to help me so much.
thank you
Comment by James — February 10, 2010 #
hello thank you soo much for this VERY excellent info. I had completed the first part of the instructions and saw that the pop ups were completely gone
i was wondering if i should still download the program as directed in the second part of the instructions seeing that i do not have vista anti-spywear on my laptop and the pop ups have stopped. i would rather not have to download anything else to my computer unless needed. thanks again!!
Comment by trudy — February 10, 2010 #
Charlie, if MBAM did not display any infections, then you are clean. You can also scan your PC with an online scanner.
Comment by Patrik — February 11, 2010 #
millions of kisses to you….thank god for your help in saving my laptop……I love you xxxx
this is the best info i have found on the net and the simplest
Comment by shana — February 11, 2010 #
i tried to do step 1 but when i try to click yes to confirm fix.reg it says “Cannot import C:\Users\User\Desktop\fix.reg: The specified file is not a registry script. You can only import binary registry files from within the registry editor.” im stuck. what should i do?
Comment by chris — February 11, 2010 #
Thanks everyone! This site really helped me! This thing showed up on my computer today – I have no idea where it came from. Anyway, the instructions here helped me get rid of it this evening.
One thing worth noting – I was unable to use the registry fix file. I ran another antivirus program first, and it found the av.exe and another file. Then I rebooted, and was unable to run programs. Then I found this site, and tried the .reg file using notepad. I was able to get the file onto my computer, but it told me it had to be in binary. So I skipped that step, and ran Malwarebytes. It found another file, and I got rid of it, rebooted, and here I am. I shouldn’t have to do that step with the .reg file, right?
Thanks everyone! This site is great.
Comment by iPaul — February 11, 2010 #
Chris, check twice the inserted script.
Comment by Patrik — February 12, 2010 #
Oh my god this was the best help I’ve had it worked perfectly thank you so much. I thought that I wouldn’t be able to sort this out but it was explained so well that even I could follow these instructions. Good job and thanks once again.
Comment by Paul — February 12, 2010 #
Followed all the instructions to the letter and glad to say my pc is all back to normal again, don’t have the rogue ‘vista internet security’ quick launch in the system tray anymore and the annoying pop ups have now gone. Tried removing this b*****d with spybot and adaware first but with no success. Many thanks for this advice, you saved me from a lot of frustration not to mention money.
Comment by Paul — February 13, 2010 #
“Note: you need uncheck the “Hide file extensions for known types” option before doing it.”
Yeah thanks for the help. How does one do this? Where is this option?
Comment by alex — February 13, 2010 #

My sister’s laptop just got the dreaded Vista Guardian. One major issue is that I can’t access ANYTHING on her user. When her profile boots up, there are about 3-4 windows for VG and a black screen. You can move the mouse around, but there isn’ anything to click. Opening up task manager, there aren’t any programs running either.
Any advice/help that I could use? She isn’t too happy, as one can guess, and any way to get around this is appreciated.
Comment by William — February 15, 2010 #

Comment by Toby — February 17, 2010 #
I did what you said and i think it worked but it only said 4 items infected. Did it still work?
Comment by Matt — February 17, 2010 #
hah, just by the ”buy to get rid of the infections (or something like that)”, I figured it was rogue.
Thanks for the info! Quick and efficient.
Comment by Dragonfyre — February 18, 2010 #
I did all the steps and I removed a big list of crap after the scan. But after I rebooted my computer it was still there. Can somebody please help me out? I really need my computer to do homework!

Comment by Andres — February 18, 2010 #
I did this, PC won’t even boot in safe mode now. I had to physically unplug it to stop the cycle of it trying to boot and failing.
Comment by Tracy — February 19, 2010 #
Bryce, probably your PC is infected with a new variant of the rogue. Ask for help in our Spyware removal forum.
Comment by Patrik — February 19, 2010 #
Andres, check what you have inserted into notepad. The fix should have “Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00″ as first line.
Comment by Patrik — February 19, 2010 #
Tracy, what shows your pc, when trying to boot it?
Comment by Patrik — February 19, 2010 #
I downloaded and clicked Finish. A window appeared and instantly disappeared. Now I have no window. I have a desktop icon, but the program will not open. Help greatly desired.
Comment by Eric — February 19, 2010 #
I opened it up in notepad but it just says this as first line,[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\.exe]
Comment by Andres — February 19, 2010 #
I believe I might be well and truly stuffed. I rebooted and now I’m getting it at startup. Thing is, the background is all black and I have no damn start menu or system tray or whatnot and now I can only access the internet by clicking ‘purchase full version’ to load the browser and rightclicking and choosing ‘open in new browser’. Is there an online removal tool? One that doesnt require downloading? I don’t think I’ll be able to access a downloaded file as I my windows key wont load the start menu either >_<
Comment by tony — February 19, 2010 #
Thank you very-very much!!! That worked just fine.
Comment by Yiannis — February 20, 2010 #
Try run fix.reg once again. If it does not help, then open a new topic in our Spyware removal forum.
Comment by Patrik — February 20, 2010 #
Andres, you have missed first line. Look above (first step) and make a new fix.reg,
Comment by Patrik — February 20, 2010 #
Tony, once windows loaded, press CTRl + ALT + DEL, Task manager opens. Type explorer.exe and click Enter.
Now run Malwarebytes.
Comment by Patrik — February 20, 2010 #
Ok i did that now what? Also thanks your smart
Comment by Andres — February 21, 2010 #
I tried the first step but it comes up with an error
Cannot import C:\Users\Keith\Documents\fix.reg: The specified file is not a registry script. You can only import binary registry files from within the registry editor.
I should mention that spydoctor removed the infected files before i got a chance to come across this website so i can’t access any exe. files at the moment.
Comment by Keith — February 21, 2010 #
Keith, check twice contents of fix.reg. It should have “Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00″ as first line.
Comment by Patrik — February 22, 2010 #
Frick. I completely removed the virus from my computer, but it has left my computer in a trail of destruction. It made it so all my traditional startup programs (Avast, Adobe, Aim, even the windows sidebar) now require a password so they don’t start automatically. Any way I can change this?
Comment by Shannon — February 22, 2010 #
Just wanted to say thank you for the relatively quick fix on this malware! easy to follow steps cleaned up my laptop. thanks again.
Comment by Amanda — February 22, 2010 #
I did the fix.reg thing, then ran malwarebytes as stated. It said there was no maliscious software but yet i still have the virus on my pc. HELP PLease
Comment by Josh — February 22, 2010 #
You have just saved my laptop I can’t thank you enough
Comment by Nicole — February 22, 2010 #
Hi Patrik,
it just tried to boot as usual, go black and go back to the fail page where it asks if you want to start in safemode, last known config or normal etc. Whichever you chose it failed and sent you back to that page. I ended up getting it seen to, the computer shop said that removing the spyware it made it deauthorise my windows! It was behaving as if it was hardware failure when it wasn’t.

Comment by Rico — February 24, 2010 #
Andres, i have updated the fix.reg. Please do first step once again.
Comment by Patrik — February 24, 2010 #
Hi — I have performed these steps and after step 1 and the reboot the program was no longer active. When I run the MWB quick scan it detects no viruses. Should I be concerned with these programs still lurking? Also could the lack of the detection be from conflicts with my other spyware/anti-virus programs?
I have avira antivir personal deactivated when I scan. I closed SUPERAntiSpyware free edition as well as Spyware Terminator. Thank you for your help with these steps so far!
Comment by Matthew — February 24, 2010 #
i got hit with vista guardian. thank you malwarebytes and the info on this site (ty author/posters on http://www.myantispyware.com!) for the easiest and simplest way to get rid of vista guardian! tytyty. i was reading the spybot forum and growing annoyed for what they wanted me to do. granted, it would be a more 1:1 method of doing it but i wanted instant gratification after staring at vista guardian for a few hours and waiting for a response. i was beginning to feel dumb and dumber esp when i have malwarebytes and spybot on my laptop.
Comment by J — February 24, 2010 #
I followed all instructions. when the malware program finished scanning it didn’t show anything. How can I be sure the virus is gone/

I did Step 1 and it updated the registry.
Got malwarebytes downloaded (though I constantly had to shut down the av.exe).
But, everytime I try to run malwarebytes, av.exe shuts it down and runs its fake scans. Any ideas?
Comment by Dan — February 25, 2010 #
Heh. Got it together. Ran the fix.reg twice and “bingo bango” I am in business.
Got that nasty malware off. Thanks alot… saved me a ton of time and money.

Will this work while in safe mode because i am unable to access the comp while in normal mode
Comment by Justin — February 25, 2010 #
THANKYOU! Seriously, I was freaking out over this stupid thing ALL morning. It just randomly popped up as Vista Antispyware 2010. Every time I tried to open firefox, it appeared. Same goes with spybot, AVG, and Malware Bytes.
I finally got them to work by running as administrator. I didn’t use Step one though. I only used MalwareBytes. It seems to be gone though.
Comment by Kayla — February 25, 2010 #
The problem with my computer is that antispyware has completely blocked off everything. I can’t even get past start and run because it won’t let me access anything. Nor can I download anything to get rid of the virus. Is my only option left to just rebooting my computer entirely? Because I’ve read in many places that antispyware can still sneak back on my computer after it’s rebooted.
Comment by Patricia — February 25, 2010 #
Cheers! Has worked perfectly! But, can I now safely delete the ‘Registration Entries’ file that was saved to my desktop? The Fix.reg?
Comment by Iain — February 25, 2010 #

Comment by Jay — February 25, 2010 #
Richard, you can`t run only Malwarebytes (and other antispyware programs) or all programs, including notepad, mspaint, etc ?
Comment by Patrik — February 26, 2010 #
Brad, you can`t “connect” to the wireless network, or your browser won`t open any sites ?
You have tried to ping google.com, etc ?

I Run The Scan, But It Find No Vista Anti-Spyware Files?!?!
Only Did The Quick Scan Tho.
Running The Full Scan Later Today To See If That Helps.
Comment by Armando — March 1, 2010 #
I have done the steps you set out, and when I run MBAM it finds the problems, says it has deleted them and it all looks as if it has worked. But when I reboot my laptop and run the scan again to check its all gone, there are still objects found, ones that it previously said were deleted.
I don’t know if I am doing something wrong, but I am fairly certain I have followed exactly the steps for removing the program?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Comment by Shawn — March 2, 2010 #

Yes I think I updated Malware Bytes beforehand. The virus appears to be gone and I’ve regained my Security Center back to normal. Just have that shield on the icon. Spyware Doctor however, is finding a few Trojans with over 200 instances. Should I pay to remove?

This virus just popped up on my computer today, I tried your steps and for some reason it wouldnt let me open the fix.reg file. It told me not all data was saved to registry and that some keys were still open by either the system or other processes. I have no clue about computers so I didnt know what to do. I did use system restore though and restored the computer from a point that was saved yesterday. So far the virus hasnt popped back up. Do you think that worked to get rid of it or could it still be on my computer?

Open TDSSKiller folder. Double click the TDSSKiller.
Follow the prompts.
Once finished, try run and update Malwarebytes.

Danielle, i think all your data is ok. You can check it using an online virus scanner.
Comment by Patrik — March 4, 2010 #
as a note, you can right click a program and pick RUN AS ADMIN and it will run that way as well (instead of step 1)
Comment by Me Here — March 4, 2010 #
Emma, Click My computer.
Turn on “show file extensions for known file types” by doing:
* Click the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* After the new window appears select the View tab.
* Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
* Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
* Press the Apply button and then the OK button.
* Now your computer is configured to show file extensions for known file types.
Navigate to C:\ Windows \ System32 folder.
Copy notepad.exe to your desktop.
Right click to it, select rename and type the new name (notepad.com). Run it.

I wanted to share my experience. Apparently I was also infected with this virus. Something popped up and told me I neded to update/purchase the program, run a scan, found some threats, etc. But I never acceded to nothing. Nevertheless, the program still appeared.
So I tried your “fix.reg”, but it said it could not load/import the data, something like it. Then I looked manually for the registry entries listed on here, but there was none. Then I used the Task Manager, where I could see the “av.exe” running. I looked at the Properties tab to find its location. It was on a temporary (sp?) folder. There were not proper folder installed on the PC.
I figured out that program somehow did not install, and I rebooted my PC. Now, it vanished. It does not longer appear on Task Manager nor has popped up again. I don’t know what happened, I assume the trick is to never accede to anything in the first place.
My advice, before trying to do ANYTHING is to be sure your computer is really infected, looking for installed folder or the provided registry entries, and THEN procceed to whatever solution may suit you. I downloaded, but did not run, the Malwarebyte, though. I don’t like installing/running programas until is really necessary, and so far I haven’t had any problems again.

Comment by fanofurs — March 4, 2010 #
this 2010 was a tough one. I was determined to get rid of it using free programs. Malwarebytes was my first choice but 2010 would not let me install the program. Smart. I looked for a solution to that problem online. Older post said rename the the bam File (that’s the start up file for malwarebytes) that did not work. So needed another FREE program 2010 did not know about. Went to download.com and used ” a-squared free” malware removal program.
It loaded and updated so I ran it . It found lots of problems on the PC. It found the 2010 malware and labeled as a high threat. It got rid of the 2010 malware. Great.
but after reboot the laptop no longer open any EXE files. That means no program would open since every program starts with a EXE file to open. Made the laptop useless. Now I have no idea if a-square free messed with my registry or if 2010 took a finale parting shot and disabled open EXE files.
There are lots of payed programs saying they can fix this. But I’m cheap so I decided to restore the laptop to the latest know working condition in the restore menu.
That worked and the 2010 did not come back with the restore.
problem solved and NO money changed hands.
Malwarebytes loaded after that and would recommend to any one to load the free version and run it often.

Hi Patrik.
‘Vista Guard’ randomly popped up when I opened this website today and instantly, I was suspicious of it so I close it immediately. However, a few minutes later on, pop ups suddenly started to appear every 5 minutes or so?
Stating that a file was infected and the pretend scan also comes up.
Also, my laptop stated that ‘Vista Guard’ firewall was off so I’m guessing that it wanted me to ‘turn it on’ to cause more problems so I ignored it and closed the window.
I haven’t downloaded or ‘registered’ the virus and my web seems to be working fine when I click on the icon so I didn’t think of doing the 1st step.
I’ve also followed your suggestion of running a ‘quick scan’ on malwarebytes anti-malware but it says that ‘no malicious items were detected.
Could you please help me immediately because I have a school project that needs to be done.
It’ll be really appreciated.

Reboot your computer and go to step 2.

Ruby, goto first step, then run Malwarebytes, update it and perform a scan.

From the 1st step, I’ve saved the information on my desktop and when I double click on it, it states that ‘Adding information can unintentionally change or delete values and cause components to stop working correctly.’
What does this mean?
If I click continue, would this cause my laptop to become unresponsive?
Comment by Ruby — March 6, 2010 #
Ruby, click OK.

I’m sorry if I’m causing any problems but I looked through all the comments and I found this comment which in some way I can relate to since I haven’t downloaded or registered the ‘vista guard’
—-
I wanted to share my experience.
—-
After reading this, I’ve tried looking for the folders and the registry entries, and basically doing what he did by rebooting.
When I looked in the task manager, the av.exe is gone and things seems to be working as normal.
Have yet to see a pop-up. Either way, Thanks Patrick for answering my questions.
Cross fingers that nothing happens anymore!
Will comment to see how it goes in a few days.

Ok… I’m so confused and frustrated!
I just decided to run a quick scan on malwarebytes anti-malware and during when it was scanning, I’ve noticed that it was scanning things with files of folders with titles beginning with -
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\
Are this warnings that the virus is in my laptop?
or is there a possiblity that these are some of the normal files found in computers?
Comment by Ruby — March 6, 2010 #
the scan just finished. ‘no malicious items were detected’ apparently.

OMFingG! Thank you so much! Worked like a charm, and it took no time at all to do. I got worried when my other programs didn’t pick it up, and I was getting blocked from doing anything on my PC, but thanks to this, my flash drive, and about 15 minutes of my day, my worries are no more. =]
Comment by Kayla — March 6, 2010 #
For those of you who cannot run Malwarebytes or another cleaner it may be because the malware has disabled .exe files; you can try looking for ‘exefix’ program that will fix the registry to get executables working again ( that’s what the registry repair ( step 1 ) on this site is about.

I spent 4 hrs on this last night trying to fix my kids PC. I’ve tried manually editing the registry per the notes here and it seems/boots OK. I’ve deleted the av.exe and it no longer appears in the task mgr. There was a version of Malwarebytes already loaded but when I try to run it I get a blue screen. I also can’t get networkng to work, I can’t even ping the router. Has anyone seen this thing affect basic networking?

Guess who won’t be renewing with Norton!

May be stupid question, but how do you download the MalwareBytes if you can’t get on the internet b/c of the malware itself? Can you download on admin account (uninfected) and run it from there? Will that work?

A few weeks ago my computer becme infected with Internet Security 2010. I followed your instructions and got rid of it. Then a week or so ago it became infected with the smss32 trojan. followed your instructions in the Remove smss32, etc page and in the process, Internet Security 2010 popped up again. Anyway did all the things your instructions say to do and the machine seems to be clean. However, I can’t boot up. It stops at the WELCOME screen. completely locked up. Have to turn the machine off. I does work in safe more – which is where I am now. Any suggestions as to how to get it to boot up properly?

It gets worse! While waiting fo9r your response, I ran AVTG – from Safe Mode – and it found two trojans: MSASCui.exe and myg.exe. It quarantined them. Thinking maybe that fixed the problem, rebooted in normal mode and it locked up before showing the Welcome screen. Went back to Safe Mode, and found that I couldn’t get on line and Antispyware 2010 popped up – in Safe Mode! So ran fix.reg and mbam again. It found av.exe and some associated files and we cleaned them out. Also had to go back to regedit and delete the line calling for av.exe as you have explained so many times. I hope it is clean again, but still no luck in booting up normally.

I ran fix.reg too to repair the reg (previously performed by my friend).Just want these were what I should be getting. When I clicked on fix.reg, a message “Adding info can unintentionally … Are you sure you want to continue”. I clicked Yes. Then message “The keys and values … have been successfully added to the registry”. However, when I ran PC Tools Registry Mechanics, I still have 1 file ext problem HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer/FileExts\Open\Withlist and 2 deep scan problems with HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Search\Gather\Windows\System Index. Did I not perform correctly? I still have problem with my 3 mobile broadband connection. The same problem local only but not local and internet. The same message’Plug a cable into your network adapter Local Area Connection’ appeared. Is there anything else I could do?

I was going crazy and this program returned my sanity. It removed the crazy Vista Antispyware 2010 from my computer. I don’t mind paying for the program. It was a lot cheaper than taking it to a computer shop. But I do think the website should tell you up-front how much it will cost before you do the scan. Also, don’t be surprised if your computer slows down for a few hours after installing Spyware Doctor. All the scanning and fixing takes a long time even after the “fix” is finished, and the whole computer slows down. But it is definitely worth it.

I read each line carefully on the notepad before saving it as a fix.reg under ‘all files’ in the dialogue box. I made sure that the first line ‘Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00′ was included.

The Vista Antispyware program popped up on my computer one day, and although I am not good with computers or anything like that, I noticed mistakes in spelling and the words used were not professional which led me to think it was a fake. I scrounged around for a while in Processes and removed the ave (I think it was) and the Vista Antispyware disappeared. However, whenever I log on now to continue the removal (like in run like you mentioned..) I cannot even access command or anything it says the following: Windows cannot access the specified device, etc. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item. Actually… this pop up message appears on everything I have attempted to access. Please help, I have two assignments due. Thanks!

Hey Guys Do not be Scared of this little PUNK ASS VIRUS! It took me 17 hrs to figure it out and it’s quite simple! once the attack is over which last for about 45-90m min turn off your computer and restart striking the F8 key! Go into DIRECTORY SERVICES SYSTEM RESTORE MODE and let your system boot up in SAFE-MODE. do not touch anything until the system has booted up at this point! since your system is owned initially by this Punk Ass Virus it will not allow you to access your programs! right click over your anti-virus program “I use Norton” and you should see run as PROGRAM ADMINISTRATOR and this will allow you to do a virus scan! once the scan is 100% complete you have to quickly do a system restore immediately after! Set your computer back about 3 DAYS cause this little PUNK ASS VIRUS has probably been on there for 2 DAYS without you knowing it! once its finished your system will auto reboot and after it does, do another Virus Scan and should capture his little Punk Ass From dos Command in the exe. files! the most important thing is to have a good Anti-virus program yourself and you should be okay! I use norton and I only trust norton since it gives 360 protection and live updates! ONCE AGAIN DO NOT COMPLY WITH THIS LITTLE PUNK ASS VIRUS wait until it’s finished taking over and go to work on repairing your personal property! if you need some help hit me on my email address! uofmsafety26 |at| yahoo.com

Hi,
I got hit by the Vista virus 2 days ago and ran the steps you recommended. It seemed to eliminate the virus, however, it came back. I repeated the steps several times and it seemed to work again.
However, the next time I went online I got hit by multiple hijack attempts of my browser, and now things are even worse. The virus seemed to have changed my ability to properly use my keyboard, ie. when I type the letter “o” it comes out as the numeral “6″. Multiple keys are effected so I cant really go to any websites (you cant type .com when you can’t type the letter “o”)
and just opening explorer invites more hijack attempts. I ran malwarebytes again, along with several other programs (webroot, ad-aware, threatfire) and they all show no viruses or malware, but my system is crashing. Can you help???
Thanks!

Hi Patrik,
Hi,
I was hit by a virus and/or malware about 10 days ago. I used programs like Malwarebytes, Ad-Aware and Webroot to temporarily remove them, however, upon rebooting the same malicious programs would attempt to hijack my web browser and otherwise cause problems with my system.
I visited this site and you suggested Kapersky. I downloaded it and it identified 4 main problems:
1) Net-Worm.Win32.Nimda. It located this virus on a file:
F:\DocumentsandSettings\Allusers……
This occurred when I was using a backup disc from an old laptop, and since it referenced a file on the F Drive,
I think the virus was on that disc. The Kapersky program said it could not disinfect this virus. I don’t know
if the virus went into other parts of my system. I took out the disc I was using with the corrupted file on it.
2) Rootkit.win.32.TDSS.d
3) Rootkit.Win32.Tdss.ai
4) Mal/TDSSRT-A
A Kapersky pop-up warning came up warning about the 3rd item I mentioned: Rootkit.Win32.Tdss.ai and asked if I would like to neutralize the threat. I clicked “Yes, Perform Recommended Action” and at the end of the action it automatically reboots the computer, however, this time my computer would not reboot.
Instead, I now get a blue error message screen that says:
A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you’ve seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK/F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.
Technical information:
***STOP: 0x0000007B (0x80399BB0, 0xC0000034, 0×00000000, 0×00000000)
I cannot reboot in safe mode or any other mode without this error message stopping me.
I don’t know how to run CHKDSK/F if I cant reboot first. I have not attached any new hardware to this system (SONY VAIO) since I purchased it a year ago, but find this message interesting because it seems to reference the F Drive again. Can anyone please help me straighten this mess out??? Thanks!

Comment by Cornelius — April 13, 2010 #
Hi. I tried the 2nd method of step 1 and after rebooting, the programs seem to be working perfectly now – even windows defender and task manager. Is it necessary for me to complete step 2? Tahnk you ever so much!

Once again, thank you so much for taking the time to help. Another question – can the fix.reg file be deleted now or do i still need to keep it?
Comment by mic — April 14, 2010 #
I’m glad I found this website. On my computer doing the notepad step 1 and 2 couldn’t be done. All I could do was just open the notepad but then that was it. I didn’t know what to do with the instructions. The web wasn’t working on my comp b/c of the virus so I had to download the antispyware to a cd from another comp and install it on my laptop. However afther the program finished scanning and found the virus it was asking for me to buy the program in order to get rid of the virus. I didn’t buy it so I figured I’d just restart the comp to see what would happen. Thank God that when I reboot it that the virus wasn’t there anymore. However the web shortcut on the desktop wasn’t working so I use the one from the start menu and that one worked. Hope this will help someone and I hope that nasty virus don’t bother my comp no more.

Hi
Ran both method one and method 2. The second I try and run either IE or Firefox the stupid file comes up.
Any other suggestions. I will open a file in spyware removal as well.

Comment by Scott — April 15, 2010 #
mic, of course you can remove fix.reg
Comment by Patrik — April 15, 2010 #
Scott, repeat first step (before “reboot your PC”), then follow the steps below:
Click Start, Run, type regedit and press Enter.
Registry editor opens.
Navigate in the left panel to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Clients \ StartMenuInternet \ IEXPLORE.EXE \ shell \ open \ command
I the right part of window click twice to “@”. You will see a screen with the contents like below: “C:\Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Application Data\av.exe” /START “C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe”
Remove left part, leave only “C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe”.
Reboot your PC.
Run Internet Explorer and download Malwarebytes.
Comment by Patrik — April 15, 2010 #
This actually works!!!!! I had issues running notepad though. If you cant open it through run you have to go to C:WindowsSystem32 and look for notepad.exe (it has the notepad icon) if the computer doesnt know what program to use click browse and find notepad (use search bar for C: if needed). I also mispelt registry in the title line for step 1 “Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00″ I spelt it registery (with an “e”). Don’t make the same mistake!!! When saving don’t forget to save under All files. Hope this helps
Comment by Henry — April 15, 2010 #
Completed both steps and everything working again so thanks for that but when I run Malaware (which I already had) no infections or problems are found. Any ideas why? and what can I do now to remove the virus?

i completed step 1 and 2 yesterday and it worked when i came back on today and went on the internet it had come back so i tried doing step 1 again and when i rebooted to do step 2 some programs have gone missing from the taskbar and when i try to run malwarebytes it says :[ this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. create an association in the set associations control panel]
so i thought maybe i had done the first step wrong , so when i tried to type command in the start run it says the same thing

This site is made of EPIC WIN. That was probably the most annoying rogue ever. Thank you so much for the instructions! *hands you a huge plate of cookies and brownies*
Comment by Bri — April 17, 2010 #
dillinja,
1. install an antispyware program with autoprotection (SpyBot, AdAware are free).
2. Many of the exploits are directed to users of Internet Explorer, use only an alternate browser – Firefox or Opera.
3. Be careful when opening attachments and downloading files.

Alright, so I had this problem once, and I followed the steps, and used Malwarebytes to get rid of the infection.
The problem is that no matter how many times I do this, the problme comes back. Or, I should say, Vista Guardian itself doesn’t come back, but I end up with the problem where .exe files don’t open, and I have to fix the registry. Then I can open the .exe files, and scans, including Malware bytes’ scan indictates that the computer is clean, and even so, after a while, I try to open a new program, and it seems that .exe files don’t open and malwarebytes’ scans show the same 3 infected files screwing with my registry again. What can I do???

Comment by GH — April 18, 2010 #
I have done step 1 and the vista antimalware no longer runs on startup, however when I downloaded antimalware pro my avg said it contained Trojans and I do not know whether this is correct or not because of everything else that has happened. Will every software I try to download contain viruses if downloaded from this laptop because the vista antimalware is still lurking? I can’t download from another computer at the moment as I don’t have one and I’m worried about these things being left on my laptop. Thank you.

Omg omg I’m in deep trouble haha
I had this virus and managed to get rid of it by putting my pc into safe mode and running mbam and it went, but it came back, but was way worse. The keys are now permanently in the system and I tried the same thing again but the virus shut off access to the internet. We took it to the repair guy and he supposedly found the virus but it came up again. We worked out it was a file on my user accountan so he went through the pc again and said he found something on my account and had defo got rid of a virus
HOWEVER. We got it back today and I had a look at the regeit just to be sure and there it was, sitting in my registry, the damn virus. I tried the registry repair methods at the top, the first one (fix.reg) did not work and the second (fix.inf) made all of my exe not work
…Wth!!
All my exe files and basically applications would NOT open
Ran mbam as an administrator and found a “broken command” root key
Got rid of the suspected infection, rebooted the pc to complete removal, and surprise surprise the virus is STILL in the registry! All my exe and applications work again but its like what else can I do?! Please help!

Hi there. I had this virus pop up while I was surfing the web, and knew something was off. I got rid of the virus using AdAware (I hope), and also used CCLeaner.
Somewhere along the way, I must have done something wrong. I can no longer access the internet, although my network seems to be connected and everything looks to be in order. I can run other programs on my computer (Adobe Photoshop, AdAware, etc etc), but internet explorer simply does not connect to the internet. Any ideas?
Comment by Jared — May 4, 2010 #
hieu, try the following:
* Click My computer.
Right click to it, select rename and type notepad.com
Run it.
Comment by Patrik — May 5, 2010 #
Jared, anyway try scan your PC with Malwarebytes.

Comment by rick — May 8, 2010 #
what these guys are telling is 100% right.
The only problem many of us facing or faced (like me)is you cant open ANY program! In order to carry out these methods is by entering in Safe Mode(With Networking) because normal mode wont let u do shit basically! Just follow Method 1 and 2 in Safe Mode once you done that enter START WINDOWS NORMALLY which will appear after restarting your laptop/pc and your are sorted.
Comment by OZZY — May 8, 2010 #
rick, you can also to use a wordpad (only save file in txt format). And try search notepad and wordpad in C:\Windows folder.
Comment by Patrik — May 9, 2010 #
so i what i did was turn my laptop off with the on/off button, started it up n picked safe mode with networking. i could get to the notepad n everything else but i didnt do anything all i did was restart the laptop the right way n the virus was gone. i had no problem opening anything, so i ran my malwarebytes program n it took care of everything. i dont know how that happened……MAGIC!!!

it says \application cannot be executed. the file ntvdm.exe is infected. do you want to activate your antivirus software now?\

I was able to get the fix.reg installed, and got my internet explorer back running. Then i hit the big “downloaded” button and “spyware doctor with antivirus” has been installed – I have never seen this mentioned on this site before. The spyware doctor checked my computer and found threats that need to be removed but its asking me to purchase it as my free trial only detects the treats but I need to pay to have them removed. is this correct ?
