Once started, the redirect virus will change settings of the Chrome, Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and MS Edge to redirect your search queries from default browser’s search engine to go.mail.ru. Remove Go.mail.ru associated software by using Windows Control Panel

First, you should try to identify and remove the program that causes the appearance of unwanted advertisements or web browser redirect, using the ‘Uninstall a program’ which is located in the ‘Control panel’.

Windows 8, 8.1, 10

First, press Windows button windows key, then click Search windows search. Once you have found a suspicious, unwanted or unused program, right click to it, after that press ‘Uninstall’.

Windows XP, Vista, 7

Get rid of Go.mail.ru from Chrome

Like other modern browsers, the Google Chrome has the ability to reset the settings to their default values and thereby restore the homepage, new tab and default search engine that have been modified by the Go.mail.ru hijacker infection.

First start the Chrome. Next, press the button in the form of three horizontal stripes (Chrome menu button). It will display the main menu. Further, press the option named “Settings”. Another way to display the Google Chrome’s settings – type chrome://settings in the web-browser adress bar and press Enter.

The browser will display the settings screen. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and press the “Show advanced settings” link. Now scroll down until the “Reset settings” section is visible, as on the image below and click the “Reset settings” button.

The Chrome will display the confirmation prompt. You need to confirm your action, click the “Reset” button. The web-browser will launch the process of cleaning. When it is done, the browser’s settings including homepage and search engine by default back to the values that have been when the Chrome was first installed on your PC system.

Get rid of Go.mail.ru redirect from FF

First, launch the Firefox. Next, press the button in the form of three horizontal stripes (FF menu button). It will display the drop-down menu. Next, click the Help button (Firefox help button).

In the Help menu click the “Troubleshooting Information”. In the upper-right corner of the “Troubleshooting Information” page click on “Refresh Firefox” button as shown on the image below.

Confirm your action, click the “Refresh Firefox”.

Remove Go.mail.ru redirect virus from Internet Explorer

To restore the start page and search provider by default you need to reset the Internet Explorer to the state, that was when the Windows was installed on your computer.

First, run the Internet Explorer, then click ‘gear’ icon IE tools menu icon. It will display the Tools drop-down menu on the right part of the browser, then click the “Internet Options” like below.

In the “Internet Options” screen, select the “Advanced” tab, then press the “Reset” button. The Microsoft Internet Explorer will display the “Reset Internet Explorer settings” prompt. Further, press the “Delete personal settings” check box to select it. Next, press the “Reset” button as shown on the screen below.

Once the process is done, click “Close” button. Close the Internet Explorer and restart your PC for the changes to take effect. This step will help you to restore your browser’s homepage, new tab and default search engine to default state.

Disinfect the browser’s shortcuts to get rid of Go.mail.ru redirect

Now you need to clean up the browser shortcuts. Check that the shortcut referring to the right exe-file of the web-browser, and not on any unknown file. Right click to a desktop shortcut for your browser. Choose the “Properties” option.

It will open the Properties window. Select the “Shortcut” tab here, after that, look at the “Target” field. The infection can modify it. If you are seeing something such as “…exe http://site.address” then you need to remove “http…” and leave only, depending on the browser you are using:

  • Google Chrome: chrome.exe
  • Opera: opera.exe
  • Firefox: firefox.exe
  • Internet Explorer: iexplore.exe

Once is complete, click the “OK” button to save the changes. Please repeat this step for web browser shortcuts which redirects to an annoying web-sites. When you have completed, go to next step.
