What is Geek Squad email scam?
Geek Squad email scam is known as a refund scam. The emails claimed that the Geek Squad renewal payment was processed successfully. However, it was nothing more than a fake designed to deceive recipients into giving up confidential information. A typical Geek Squad scam involves an email that mimics the design and style of official Geek Squad. Below are some examples of real scams that were 100% fake, but yet, they were used to trick people into handing over money or personal details.
The Geek Squad email, which appears to have been sent from Geek Squad Team, is a SCAM. This scam email is relatively well designed. The scammers claim that the user’s subscription to the “Geek Squad Security Services” will be renewed today. Of course, this email is completely bogus and is just a way for the scammers to steal users identity and credit card information.
The purpose of this scam is to try to trick users into calling the provided phone numbers. Scammers try to phish personal or banking information, have users install malware, or perform the “refund scam”. Scammers Phone Numbers: +1 (808) 646-5151, Ref No.: 1UL89S2187548SL. How Does the Geek Squad Email Scam Work?
First, scammers try to trick users into calling a fake hotline and claiming a refund for a supposed Geek Squad product renewal. The scammers ask for personal information, bank account or credit card details, claiming that a refund would be processed. In fact, they would take the financial information and try to steal the funds.
While less likely, scammers may try to trick victims into purchasing fake support services or installing a remote control tool, which they pretend to be a program to diagnose a computer. It is important to understand that having access to a computer, scammers can steal private information and personal files, install malware (spyware, ransomware or Trojan horses).

If you receive such emails regularly, then this may be a sign that there is adware, trojan or spyware on your device. In this case, you need to scan the device for malware, remove unnecessary and suspicious apps.
- Always be wary of Emails, Social Media, Pop-ups and Websites.
- NEVER share your personal information.
- Never follow Email Links. Don’t open Email Attachments if you are not sure or expecting it.
- Be careful if you get odd emails from a friend or Family Member. They could have had their email account hacked.
- Report Scam Attempts to FTC at https://www.ftc.gov/
- Scan your PC for malware.
- Install an anti-phishing software.
If you suspect that your computer is infected with spyware, you accidentally clicked on a link in the scam email, or just want to scan your computer for malware, then use one of the free malware removal tools.
6 Ways to Detect a Phishing Email
Phishing emails often share common characteristics; they are designed to trick victims into clicking on a phishing link or opening a malicious attachment. If you know these characteristics, you can detect phishing emails and prevent identity theft.
Here are some ways to recognize a phishing email
- Inconsistencies in Email Addresses. The most obvious way how to spot a scam email is finding inconsistencies in email addresses and domain names. If the email claims to be from a reputable company, like Geek Squad, Amazon or PayPal, but the email is being sent from a public email domain, such as “gmail.com” it’s probably a scam.
- The domain name is misspelt. Look carefully for any subtle misspellings in the domain name. Like arnazon.com where the “m” has been replaced by “rn”, or paypa1.com, where the “l” has been replaced by “1”. These are common tricks of scammers.
- Generic greetings. If the email starts with a generic “Dear”, “Dear sir” or “Dear madam” that is a warning sign that it might not really be your shopping site or bank.
- Suspicious links. If you have the slightest suspicion an email may be a scam, do not click on the links you see. Instead, hover over the link, but don’t click it. This will pop up a small box that contains the actual URL. This works on image links as well as text links.
- Unexpected attachments. Email attachments should always be verified before clicking. Any attachments should be scanned for viruses – especially if they have an unfamiliar extension or one commonly associated with malware (.zip, .exe, .scr, etc.).
- The email creates a sense of urgency. Creating a false sense of urgency is a common trick of phishing emails. Be suspicious of emails that claim you must call, open an attachment or click a link immediately.
