VirusTotal added F-Secure Anti-Virus and eTrust-InoculateIT to their lineup of scanners

The team over at VirusTotal has added the F-Secure Anti-Virus and eTrust-InoculateIT to their lineup of scanners. VirusTotal is a free, independent service that analyzes suspicious files using multiple antivirus engines.

From there, you can easily check to see if F-Secure Anti-Virus have detection for something new that you’ve found. In the near future F Secure will also add DeepGuard.

WMF Vulnerability checker

Ilfak Guilfanov, who has brilliantly come up with the ONLY legitimate patch for the WMF exploit, has a new tool to check to make sure it’s working.

Kaspersky Anti Virus - Free Online File Scanner

If you discover a suspicious file on your machine, or suspect that a program you downloaded from the Internet might be malicious, you can check the files here.

Indicate the file to be checked; it will automatically be uploaded from your computer to a dedicated server, where it will be scanned using Kaspersky Anti-Virus. Multiple independent tests and publications acknowledge the solution to have exceptional detection rates. Updates every three hours ensure that even the very newest viruses can be detected.

Only one file of up to 1 MB can be checked at any one time. If the file is too large, a window with an error message will be displayed. Type the name of the file in the window at the top of this page, or find the file using ‘Browse’. Then click on ‘Submit’.

If you have several potentially suspicious files, you can check them one after the other, or create an archive file (in zip, arj or similar format) and check that. The archive should not be larger than 1 MB.

Online Security Scanner from Microsoft - Windows Live Safety Center

Microsoft revealed a beta version of its free on-line security scanning tool Windows Live Safety Center. The scanner, which currently requires the use of Internet Explorer, uses an ActiveX control to scan the visitor’s system for malicious software, open ports, as well as for non-security performance issues.

Windows Live Safety Center is reminiscent of Microsoft’s free Windows Defender tool, formerly known as Windows AntiSpyware. I’ve been beta-testing Windows Defender for some time, and I find it quite good at detecting and blocking spyware threats, especially because of its behavioral blocking functionality that automatically blocks suspicious actions on the local system. The on-line scanner doesn’t provide such continuously-monitoring features; however, its performance tuning and anti-virus functionality is very similar to the Windows OneCare service.

Windows OneCare, which is still in beta, “runs continuously in the background, offering persistent, always-on security protection and PC maintenance that generally does not require any action on your part,” according to the recent Windows OneCare newsletter. Windows Live Safety Center offers similar functionality, but rather than offering continuous protection, it is an on-demand service.
