How to remove Total Vista Security, Vista Security Tool 2010
Total Vista Security also known as Vista Security Tool 2010 is a rogue antispyware program, clone of widely spread Vista Antispyware 2010. As before, the design of the program looks like an antispyware application, but in reality, it can not remove viruses, trojans, etc., nor will be protect your computer from legitimate future infections. Total Vista Security created with one purpose to trick you into purchasing the full version of the software.
Total Vista Security (Vista Security Tool 2010) uses trojans to infiltrate your computer. When this trojan is started, for some time he himself does not manifest, thus hiding the web site with which he entered on the computer. A few minutes later, it will secretly download and install the rogue onto your computer without any request or permission.
During installation, Total Vista Security (Vista Security Tool 2010) will register itself in the Windows registry to run automatically every time when you start an application (files with “exe” extension). The rogue also uses this method of running to block the ability to run any programs, including security applications.
Once installed, Total Vista Security starts scanning procedure, which results in finding the set of trojans, viruses and other malicious programs. All of these infections are fake, so you can safely ignore them. What is more, while the rogue is running, it will display fake security alerts and notifications with “Spyware infection has been found” or “Tracking software found” header. Obviously, such results are a fraud, Total Vista Security want to force you to believe that your computer is infected. Last but not least, the rogue will also hijack Internet Explorer and Firefox and display fake warnings when you opening a web site.
As stated above, Total Vista Security (Vista Security Tool 2010) is scam, which designed with one purpose to scare you into thinking that your computer in danger as a method to trick you into purchasing the full version of the program. If your computer is infected with this malware, then most importantly, do not purchase it! Uninstall the rogue from your PC as soon as possible. Hey guys, after I did the registry trick and rebooted, the vista 2010 stopped popping up. I did the scan with Malwarebytes anyway, but no files were found. Is this concerning?
Comment by Takuza — April 6, 2010 #
hi thanks for your advice, i tried to follow instructions (regedit) but when i enter it keeps saying regedit exe application not found, the virus has gone so dont need malware but still cant follow these instructions. i have tried to get Malwarebytes Anti-malware anyway and even put on a disc by using my pc but when i try to install on my sons laptop it wont open as it needs to open eith ie. dont know what else to do now – the regedit looked so simple but cant do it.
Comment by barbara — April 6, 2010 #
I encountered this malware on a computer and tried Malwarebytes first, it found nothing. I then found your site and ran your script however it would not run in normal mode, it would fail to open registry editor and fail to add the data. I booted into safe mode and then in would add the script. Then I rebooted and tried again to run Malwarebytes however it still found nothing. SuperAntiSpyware found nothing also. I checked MSCONFIG and seen that most of the programs were unchecked for starting. The computer would not open a command prompt, would not open regedit and the printer would not communicate with the PC. I wound up doing a complete restore on the PC. What went wrong, any ideas? Thanks.
Comment by Chris — April 6, 2010 #
Bill, this instruction does not affect to the internet connection.
Comment by Patrik — April 7, 2010 #
Takuza, Malwarebytes should found a few infections. Try update it and scan once again.

Comment by Patrik — April 7, 2010 #

Thanks so much! It’s good to know that there are some decent people out there to counter the pathetic dipshits that create this crap.
Don’t know how my machine got infected – nearly fell for the scam but was suspicious that it called itself Vista Security Tool when I’m running XP. Search engine brought me here.
Thanks also for explaining a little about how it works – I’d taken the precaution of loading Security Centre form the Control Panel and it brought up the same warnings and was demanding payment to switch ont he firewall which is what confirmed to me it was a scam – but I didn’t know how the virus had done that, till I read the info above.
All gone now. Interestingly Windows Defender has started popping up about the importance of malware protection, and it blocked some start-up programmes. All seems well though.
Thanks again!
Comment by Robert — April 10, 2010 #
I recevied the virus off of Egotastic.com, or a site it guided me to. Your guided fix worked the first time around and I THANK YOU VERY, VERY MUCH for putting the self-help power to the consumers’ hands. I was up and running w/in 20 minutes.
You are GREAT!
Comment by Tampa Matt — April 13, 2010 #
I tried the registry editor and I kept getting a .dll error. I then followed the directions for method 2… now none of my .exe files will open. The malware isn’t popping up, but I can’t run MBAM. I don’t know what to do now. I am running Vista as my OS. Oh, please help!

My internet totally stopped working after doing #1 in this process. I downloaded malwarebytes on another computer and installed it via usb to my infected laptop. It didn’t update because I had no internet access. Luckily the version I downloaded was updated recently. It found a few things and I got rid of them. But I could not get my internet access to work correctly anymore. I just decided to back up files and reformat.
Comment by Joey — April 15, 2010 #

Hope this works…son has a laptop infected with Vista Defender (same family as Vista Antivirus Pro, etc). Tried installing antivirus from USB flash drive, but of course, didn’t work. Going to go at it manually and hope I don’t destroy his computer.

Comment by Dane — April 16, 2010 #
feefee, ok try another way. Please download exeHelper from here to another PC, then move this file to your computer using a flash or cd disk. Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix. Reboot your computer and try download/run Malwarebytes.
Comment by Patrik — April 16, 2010 #
Dane, try first step once again, if it does not help, then try exeHelper (read my previous comment).
Comment by Patrik — April 16, 2010 #
I used method 2 & TDSS Killer before I was able to use the Malwarebyte Anti-malware and finally get rid of this malware or so I thought, then I restarted my laptop and find everythings screwed up.
Now, it seems the anti-malware is disabled and whenever I try to open it, explorer or firefox, it always asks me which file I want to open it with… (only firefox works out of the three).
Its driving me crazy
Comment by Frank — April 16, 2010 #
ok i have done the exehelper and still nothing ?
Comment by feefee — April 16, 2010 #
Hi, when I try to do Method #1, when I try to run the fix.reg, it says \Cannot import C:Users….ix.reg: The specified file is not a registry script. You can only import binary registry files from within the registry editor.\ Does this mean I did it wrong?
Comment by Nick — April 16, 2010 #
Thanks Patrik
In the end, I managed to get it all fixed and no longer experience the problem by downloading exefix_vista (going on to reboot my pc soon after).
Before that I was unable to use regedit as it kept saying that the application could not be found.
Comment by Frank — April 17, 2010 #
feefee, ask for help in our Spyware removal forum.
Comment by Patrik — April 17, 2010 #

Comment by Hariz — April 17, 2010 #
I just wanted to say THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for this. I was struggling with this problem for hours. All other sites say just download Malwarebytes and run it but no one else addresses the issue of “Total Vista Security” not allowing you to open any programs!
This finally did the trick! Again, THANK YOU. Really. This is the computer I use for college and the one my mother uses for work and this page just saved both my schoolwork and her job.
Thank you!

Ok just to warn you, Im NOT computer savvy at all. I have no idea what an “exe file” is . . . I dont even think I can pronounce that.
(just to give you a sense of what your dealing with.)
First let me start by saying I was seriously considering purchasing the software to fix my computer. Completely by chance I came across this site and by the grace of God I was able to MANNUALY preform step 1 and I believe succesfully rid my computer of thie henious Vista Security Tool foolishness. So major thanks Patrik!
Now heres the problem: after restarting my computer I found that I am unable to open ANY of my programs. Im talking” AIM, iTunes, Skype, MS Office, Limewire, and not to mention a number of games that came standard on my laptop. Solitare, minesweeper, mahjong, etc. In fact, the only thing that DOES seem to work on my computer now is Internet Explorer. My whole LIFE is on this flipping laptop Patrik . . . PLEASE HELP!!!!!
I look forward to your genious

I completed step 1 and rebooted the computer, and the Security Tool pop-ups have stopped. However, I’m now unable to open anything, including the setup for MBAM. I also tried repeating step 1 with the second method, but I can’t open notepad either.
Comment by Connor — April 22, 2010 #
Connor, you need run Notepad through Command console. To run command console, CLick Start, Run. Type “command” w/o quotes and press Enter. Command console = black window opens, type notepad and press Enter.
Comment by Patrik — April 22, 2010 #
hi sorry to ask such a stupid question but when i click start it dosent give me the run option how do i get to it.
Comment by karen — April 22, 2010 #
Ok, I managed to get notepad open and did step 1 again, but I still can’t open the MBAM setup, it just brings up the command console every time I click it. I’ve tried to change the default program for .exe files, but I couldn’t. What do I do now?
Comment by Connor — April 23, 2010 #
karen, if you using Vista with classic theme, then you need click Start, and type “command” w/o quotes in Search field.
Comment by Patrik — April 23, 2010 #
Connor, try method 2, once completed, don`t reboot your PC, go to step 2 (run Malwarebytes).
Comment by Patrik — April 23, 2010 #
I performed the steps above and it seemed to work in removing the problem. But the MalwareBytes scan I performed only found 3 infected files, which seems really different from the above image which looks like it has 20 or so infected files. So I was just wondering if this is normal or if some of the virus may be hidden somewhere. I didn’t see anything about the registry keys or files that are listed above. A second MalwareBytes scan found nothing else. Does this mean that I really got rid of Vista Security, or could it still be lingering around?
Comment by Vicky — April 24, 2010 #
Vicky, try update Malwarebytes and perform a fresh scan. If result – zero, then you`re clean.
Comment by Patrik — April 24, 2010 #
heya, how long is the scan supposed to last, mine has taken 56 mins so far, is that too long??
Comment by jenny — April 25, 2010 #

Gr8..it worked for me…million thanks
Comment by uman — April 25, 2010 #
Hi
when I type command, Security tool is preventing the black dialogue box from opening, so I cannot even get to notepad.
what can I do?
Comment by Emma — April 27, 2010 #
Hi Patrik,
I followed step 1 and step 2. Malwarebytes found and deleted Security Tool. I’ve run several other antivirus/spy/malware tools and there’s no sign on the virus, however, i still cant access Firefox or Internet Explorer (or Skype for that matter).
The programs load but Firefox says “Problem loading page – server not found” and IE says “Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage”
Help would be greatly appreciated. Im running Vista.
Comment by Tom — April 27, 2010 #

Reboot your PC and try run Internet Explorer once again.
Comment by Patrik — April 28, 2010 #
I followed step 1, but when it came to installing Malwarebytes I can download it, but every time I open the file it does nothing. I’ve tried downloading it from lots of different places all over the internet to no avail – could Total Vista Security be blocking it’s installation? If so, could I use another free malware remover? Windows Defender won’t install as it’s already installed but when I open it I get taken straight to Total Vista Security! Argh!
Thanks so much in advance for any help you can lend!
